If you like lasagna but want something a little different, how about a mushroom chicken lasagna? With plenty of spinach and two distinctive hard cheeses this lasagna recipe is a tasty alternative to a typical red sauce lasagna.
What Makes This Lasagna Different?
- Gruyere cheese
- Parmigiano Reggiano cheese or parmesan cheese (Yes, there is a difference!)
- Flavorful baby spinach
- White sauce
- Nutmeg
- No boil lasagna noodles
You will still have a layered pasta dish, but this spinach, chicken, cheese, and mushroom lasagna will offer a different combination of tastes. Adding ingredients you might not think of in a typical lasagna will surely please you and your guests.
Why Are These Ingredients Used?
Using no boil lasagna noodles is a favorite of ours. In fact, we’ve used these in other layered pasta dishes. Why do we use these?
- They lay flat in the baking dish
- They do not need to be pre-boiled and separated
- They absorb most sauces well
- They provide a nice square when cut before serving
Nutmeg might seem like a strange ingredient. Why do we use nutmeg?
- Nutmeg works well with spinach
- It gives a hint of warm spice
- Nutmeg pairs with the spiciness of the red pepper flakes
How Do You Prepare This Spinach, Chicken, Cheese, and Mushroom Lasagna?
- Organize all ingredients ahead of preparation
- Chop everything before you assemble the lasagna
- Have the ingredients ready and in order to add to the pan
- Use a large sauté pan
- Spray or grease the baking dish before you start
Always a good tip is to remember to read the recipe before you start chopping and cooking. That way you will have everything you need to make this spinach, chicken, cheese, and mushroom lasagna. Once you have the ingredients laid out, you can start chopping and measuring all of them.
After everything is chopped, you can then start to sauté and cook.
What Should You Do After the Lasagna is Assembled?
- Cover the pan with foil
- Place the pan in the refrigerator for up to three hours
- Remove the pan 30 minutes prior to baking the spinach, chicken, cheese, and mushroom lasagna
- Leave the foil on the pan
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
- Bake the lasagna for 30 minutes with the foil on
- Check after 30 minutes
- Remove the foil from the pan
- Return to the oven
- Bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes
You want your spinach, chicken, cheese, and mushroom lasagna to have a nice, slightly browned crust on top. There should be bubbling from the cheese and sauce. We often check ours at 20 minutes and decide if it needs to be in a little longer.
Every oven is different in temperature, so it’s important to check to make sure it doesn’t get too brown.
Can You Make This Lasagna Ahead of Time?
Absolutely you can make this spinach, chicken, cheese, and mushroom lasagna ahead of time. We often make ours early in the day and put it in the refrigerator. Cover it with foil and let it sit. Because this helps all the flavors meld together, it also allows the noodles to soften up a little.
Before you bake this, remove the pan from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature. This will take about 30 minutes. By doing this, your cooking time will be less and your lasagna will cook more evenly.
What Can You Serve With Spinach Chicken, Cheese, and Mushroom Lasagna?
- Garlic bread
- Crisp lettuce salad
- Crusty French baguette
- Sourdough bread with butter
- Focaccia bread
Basically, any type of bread pairs well with this lasagna. Since the flavors of Gruyere and Parmesan Reggiano are distinctive, bread is an ideal partner. The same reason applies to a crisp lettuce salad. Since spinach and mushrooms are in the lasagna, include leaf lettuce, strawberries, and a balsamic dressing for a tasty treat.
Can You Reheat the Spinach, Chicken, Cheese, and Mushroom Lasagna?
If you have any leftover spinach, chicken, cheese, and mushroom lasagna it will make a great lunch item the following day. The flavors tend to be just as good the second day. How should you reheat your lasagna?
- Wrap the lasagna in foil or place it in a glass container with a tight-fitting lid
- Place it in the refrigerator
- Remove it the following day
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees
- Place the lasagna in an oven-safe pan and add a small amount of water
