Around here we love avocados. We also like to make sure we store them correctly and not let them turn brown. Do you know how to keep avocados?
What is the Best Way to Keep Cut Avocados?
Wasting half an avocado is not an option for us. Yet, there are times when we only want or need one half of an avocado. What do we do?
One way to keep avocados is to leave the skin on the half you want to save. Keep the pit in it as well. That blocks oxygen from getting to the fleshy part. Place a piece of parchment paper over the cut side, secure it well, and store in the refrigerator. Be sure to wrap it tightly in the parchment paper.
Another way is when you have already taken all the skin off. You could store the avocado by smashing it and putting it in a glass container. Sprinkle some lime or lemon juice on top. Lay a piece of parchment paper, again securely, on top. Make sure to get out as much air as possible.
What is the Best Way to Keep Whole Avocados?
You can store your avocados on the counter and they will ripen at room temperature. It is probably better to store them in the refrigerator as it slows down the ripening process. This works especially when your avocados are almost ripe. If it is totally unripe, it will eventually ripen. Keep in mind it may affect the taste.
What Are Some Strange Ideas to Keep Avocados?
We have read some people suggest storing them with olive oil all over the top. This has not worked for us.
Another thing we read was to boil the whole avocado for 10 seconds. It may work but we did not like the texture.
One more thing is to keep the pit with the mashed avocado. Leaving the pit in your guacamole just did not work for us either.
Do You Know Why Avocados Turn Brown?
It is just simple oxidation. It is the same thing as having your cut apples, bananas, or peaches turn brown. When oxygen hits the flesh of the avocado, it will turn brown.
