We have all been there. We love avocados, but often use only a half of one at a time. That leaves another half. What do you do to keep it from going bad before you use it the next day? How do you store half an avocado?
We have published different posts on different ways to keep them from turning an ugly, unappetizing shade of brown. It seems everyone has a suggestion. With that in mind, here is one more way you can try to store half an avocado. Give it a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.
When we make guacamole, we use lime juice. Not only does this give us the taste we want, it also keeps the guacamole green. Not brown. Why? The acid from the lime juice helps to prevent mashed or cut avocados from turning brown quickly.
Use the same method to store half an avocado for later use. Squeeze a little lime or lemon juice over the cut side, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and place it in the refrigerator.
This method should work to keep your half of an avocado green for tomorrow.
What happens if you have lots and lots of avocados? Did you know you can freeze them? Scoop out the flesh or dice it and place it in a single layer in the freezer. When it is frozen, you can add to a bag or container to keep in the freezer. This works when you want to save them for smoothies later in the month.
If you have avocados that you want to keep from getting too ripe, store them in the refrigerator. This slows down the ripening process.
On the flip side, if your avocados are not getting ripe quickly enough you can speed up the ripening process. Store them in a paper bag at room temperature.
Let us know if this method for storing half an avocado works for you.
